We’ve all had that moment. You see a photo of a living room online that looks stunning—crisp white rugs, perfectly chopped pillows, and not a single TV remote in sight. Then you look at your own coffee table, which is currently holding a half-empty mug, some mail you haven’t opened, and maybe a stray sock.
It’s easy to feel like you’re “failing” at interior design. But here’s the thing we tell all our clients at Best Interior Decoration: A house that looks like nobody lives there isn’t a home. It’s a set.
And you deserve a home, not a set.
The biggest mistake people make is trying to copy-paste a magazine look into their actual life.
- The White Sofa Myth: Unless you live alone and never drink red wine or coffee, that bleach-white linen sofa is going to be a source of stress, not relaxation. We’re big fans of “performance fabrics“—materials that look expensive but can be wiped clean with a damp cloth after a spill.
- The “Too Many Pillows” Problem: If you must spend 10 minutes moving pillows just to sit down and watch a movie, you have too many pillows. Design should make your life easier, not give you more chores.
How to Make a Room Feel “Human“
So, how do you get that high-end look without losing the cozy, lived-in feel? It’s all about intentional mess.
- The Basket Trick: Every room needs a “landing zone.” A beautiful seagrass or wire basket can hold all the stuff that usually ends up on the floor—toys, blankets, or even those shoes you kicked off. It hides the clutter but keeps it handy.
- Books That Actually Get Read: Don’t just buy books because the spines match your curtains. Put out the books you actually love. A stack of well-loved novels tells people more about you than a $200 coffee table book ever will.
- The Power of “Lived-in” Lighting: Harsh overhead lights feel like a doctor’s office. Turn them off! Use small lamps, a few candles, or even some dimmable floor lights. It hides the dust and makes everyone in the room look (and feel) 10 times better.
You Are the Main Character
At the end of the day, Best Interior Decoration isn’t about us showing off our style. It’s about us helping you find yours.
Your home should be the place where you can be your messiest, happiest, truest self. If you’re tired of living in a space that feels stiff or just okay, let’s talk. We don’t do “perfect“—we do “perfect for you.”
